Note to all Windows 2000 Users

Note: If you already can dial into the Internet and visit web sites with
Internet Explorer, and just need to configure Outlook Express, please follow
the instructions for Outlook Express configuration in the Windows 95/98
section.

To set up Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to run on Windows 2000, use the following procedure:

1. Go to "Start", "Settings", and "Network and Dial-up Connections"

2. Double-click on "Make new Connection"

3. At the Network Connection Wizard, click "Next"

4. Select "Dial-up to the Internet"

5. Select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area (LAN)"

6. Select "I connect through a phone line and a modem"

7. Enter the telephone number provided to you by 281 Communications for your local area.  Insure your computer is not dialing a "1" before the number!

8. Enter your account name and password. These are on the sheet given to you by 281 Communications when you signed up for service.  Most usernames have "@281.bz" after them.

9. Name the connection "281" and click "Next"

10. Select "Yes" and click "Next"

11. If this screen comes up, select "Create a new Internet mail account"

12. This is your real name.

13. Enter your e-mail address. This is your account name, followed by "@281.com". The example here has entered "johnsmith@281.com"

14. Enter "tim.281.com" into the incoming mail field.  Most customers will require "go.281.com" in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field.

15. Enter your account name and password. Note that you should NOT put in the "@281.com"

16. Click Finish.

17. Make sure this window says you are connecting to 281.com, and that your account name is correct. Then hit "Connect", and you're done!

18. In Outlook Express, click the tools menu and select Accounts.  Click the Mail tab, highlight your 281.com mail account, then click the Properties button.

19. Click the Servers tab.  Check the box in front of:  "My Server requires Authentication".  Click OK.  Click close.

If you want to, you can also set 281.com's home page or highland-lakes.com to be your default home page. To do this, follow these steps:

18. In Internet Explorer, select "Tools" and "Internet Options"

19. Enter "http://home.281.com" into the "Address:" field.

20. To bring up your new home page, click on the "Home" button on the toolbar.

That's it!
